There are a few characteristics that separate influencers from the rest of the pack. First is the fact that their actions almost always garner publicity. Influencers are featured on TV and in big publications, and their messages touch thousands of lives. Secondly, the credibility indicators that define an influencer are special or unique. This is why we discussed awards in the last section, and not in this one. Unless you receive an Emmy or the like, any Tom, Dick or Harry can win an award. Awards have been around for ages; they don’t have the same special quality as the achievements discussed in the following pages.

Some unique ways influencers capture media attention are through podcast or talk show appearances, having articles published in the New York Times or by writing a book. In this section we’ll discuss these three credibility indicators as well as several others.

Lastly, bear in mind that obtaining these influencer indicators does not necessarily make you a real influencer. If you write a book and nobody reads it, who are you influencing? If you publish a few articles on Forbes, then sit on your couch unemployed for a year in your mom’s basement, are you touching thousands of people’s lives? In either scenario, the answer is probably “no.”

Being a real influencer is the result of constant marketing. However, for the purposes of this final section, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re a real influencer or not. If you add these indicators to your website, in most cases you will win eye-popping credibility by default.
