Google Analytics: Why Use It?

Google Analytics may be something you have heard of. Google Analytics is the most popular web analytics platform. Although it has its flaws, Google Analytics is the best available and most comprehensive analytics tool for understanding site traffic. It’s also free.

Google Analytics is not installed on your computer. Install it now, and you can slap your web developer. I am not kidding. Growing a business online without Google Analytics is like piloting an airplane blindfolded. It’s hard to know what works and what doesn’t. You can also identify problems and fix them before they become bigger problems. This will give you a better idea of where your business is heading. Google Analytics can be used to monitor the performance of a company and is available for about 95% of businesses.

Google Analytics: How to Use It

Let me warn you, this is a risky proposition. Most data can be used by itself. This is correct. To gain real insight and awareness, it is necessary to be able compare data and spot trends over time. You can analyze and understand data in Google Analytics by using two methods:

1. Compare two date ranges.

In Google Analytics, click on the date input button. You can use the same timeframe to compare both. You can use date comparisons to compare this week’s performance with last week’s, last month’s performance to previous month, and last year’s performance against the same month in the past year.

2. Take a look at the charts for a longer time period.

You can simply look at the charts for the longest period and search for trends without having to compare dates. Although this isn’t the best way to find specific insights or hard-to-find information, it is useful for getting a birds-eye view of where your traffic is headed.

Notice: Seasonality can have an impact on many businesses. You may notice a decrease in traffic occasionally, but it does not necessarily mean that your site is performing poorly. Your market could experience a downward trend in some months. You can use the “compare 2 date ranges” approach to determine if your business is in a downward trend. Then, compare the traffic for the current month with the same month last years. If your site is seeing growth, it’s likely that you’re performing well regardless of seasonal trends.


Google Analytics’ Acquisition section is one that every marketer or business owner should pay attention to. Google Analytics’ Acquisition section breaks down the source of your site traffic. It is nearly impossible to make informed decisions about your website’s performance or marketing without keeping an eye on the traffic sources.

In the sidebar, click “Acquisition”. You can view the actual traffic that you have received from each source in the “All Traffic” section. You will be especially interested in the Channels section under “All Traffic”. This section lists the top sources that send customers to your site. You can also dig deeper to see the performance of specific sources that send customers to your website, such as search engine visitors and email visitors.

Organic Search report.

Monitoring your performance in search engines is crucial for the Organic Search report. The Organic Search report allows you to see the number of visitors you have received from search engines.

It is worth noting that Google made some changes to Google Analytics a few years back. These changes still have many search engine marketers and marketing professionals shaking at the sky. Google altered this tool in 2012 to hide large amounts of keyword information. This made it difficult to find exact information about keywords customers use to reach your site. Google, thank you!

If someone searches for a keyword using Google, and they have a Google account, it will be displayed in Google Analytics as “not provided”. This means that you don’t know what the person searched for before they arrive at your site.

Google has slowly increased the amount of keyword information. However, don’t worry. We can still assess overall search engine traffic performance by looking at total increases and decreases in our Organic Search report.

Click on the Acquisition tab in the left sidebar to view the Organic Search report. Click on “Acquisition”, click “All Traffic”, click “Channels”, then click “Organic Search.”


Imagine being able to narrow your audience down to a specific segment, such as search engine traffic, paid traffic, mobile traffic and iPad users. You can instantly see how many users have inquired about your site, how long they spend on it, where they live and how many sales they make. Segments is the name of this feature.

Segments are powerful. Segments can help you identify segments of your audience that are more likely to generate inquiries or sales than others. Segments can also be used to identify areas of your audience that are having trouble using your site. This will allow you to gain insight into how to improve your performance.

Each time a visitor loads a page from your site, a Pageview is recorded.

Unique Pageviews.

Similar to a Pageview but one user can only load a page once.


A session is when a visitor visits the site and closes their browser. This session is added if the visitor comes back to the site again.


A user who visits your site and then returns to it at a later stage is considered one User.

Bounce Rate

A bounce is when a visitor leaves your website without visiting any other pages. Your bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who bounce. Marketers and business owners often ask: What is a good bounce ratio? There is no universal rule. There are many factors that affect bounce rates. A page that has a high bounce rate (+70%) could indicate that visitors are unhappy with the content or have technical problems.

Conversion rate

Your site conversion rate is one of the most important metrics you should monitor. The conversion rate is simply the percentage of users who complete a desired action. You could ask for information, download a product or buy something from you. This would give you a conversion rate of three percent if you have 100 visitors and three of them complete a sale.
