Your URL is a huge deal

You might have heard of the importance and value of owning a domain. I will keep this chapter brief. Your URL is important. You should avoid using a website builder such as Wix, WordPress.com, WordPress.com, or any of the dozens others available.

Your URL is immediately visible to visitors. A.wordpress.com/.jimdosite.com after it instantly discredits your company. Visitors will notice that you are either doing this as a hobby, or not taking it seriously. So why would a customer want to do business with you? They shouldn’t waste their time on your site. Most won’t.

You’ll lose prospects even before they visit your site. Prospects will likely leave your website if they see your URL on their business cards or in search results. It’s easy to see how it works. Your URL is your brick and mortar shopfront. It can be branded with another website platform’s name. It makes a bad first impression. This is why I believe that a professional URL is the most important credibility indicator as mentioned in the Essentials section.

Now that you have that out of the way, where can you get your URL?

A domain registrar is a website that sells domains. It doesn’t matter where you buy your domain. Domains are a commodity.

Domain.com, HostGator, or anywhere else will not affect the quality of your domain. Both Namecheap and GoDaddy have been great for me. Any of them would be a good choice.

Domains can be purchased directly through their websites.
